Saint-Émilion’s easily accessible location makes it an ideal day-trip destination. It’s no wonder that the majority of visitors arrive from Bordeaux in the morning, spend a few hours exploring the town’s pretty streets, have a delicious lunch and take part in a wine tour or two. That said, spending a weekend in Saint-Émilion can be a better option to really get the most out of this unique town and its surroundings.

By car it takes 50 minutes to get to the town of Saint Émilion from Bordeaux city center, for those transferring from Bordeaux airport also allow 50 minutes. By bus the route takes approximately an hour, and the train from Bordeaux St Jean also takes one hour, but bear in mind there is also a 25-minute walk to the town from the train station. 

The town of Saint Émilion is approximately 25 minutes walk away from the nearest train station. The walk is relatively pleasant along the D122 road, with a footpath winding through the fields of vines, but if you’re getting from Bordeaux to St Émilion by train you’ll need to factor that into your journey times.

Of course it’s possible to explore Saint Émilion without a tour. The winding medieval streets are made for wandering around and there are lots of sights to see, as well as restaurants and wineries where you can sample the local produce. At the same time, an experienced guide, whether that’s a dedicated tour guide or a local chauffeur from the region can really make the difference to your visit.
