Interesting facts about Nashville International Airport

Nashville International Airport is commonly referred to both locally and internationally, by its code, BNA.

BNA stands for Berry Field Nashville, named after Colonel Harry S. Berry, the airport's first administrator when it opened in 1937 as “Berry Field”. The name stuck for the IATA code even after it became Nashville International Airport in 1988.

As well-known as this name is, there’s another that outshines it the world over—Dolly Parton. On Jan 21, 2025, comedian Lydia Popovich started an online petition to honor the Tennessee native by changing the airport name to honor Parton’s legacy and impact on Nashville.

"We request that the airport’s name be changed to Dolly Parton International Airport to honor an icon who has given so much to our state and to the world," reads the petition. "We could all be Departin' from Parton!"

Dolly herself doesn’t take it too seriously, but it’s a nice story regardless, and if there’s anyone deserving of the honor, it’s her.
