Zayed International Airport history

Formally known as Abu Dhabi International Airport, it officially changed its name to Zayed International Airport in 2024 after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding father and first President. However, despite the name change, the airport is still often also referred to by its former title.

Abu Dhabi's aviation history starts in the 1950s with a basic dirt strip, before a proper international airport opened at Al Bateen in 1968. The current site started construction in 1979, with the new airport being inaugurated on 2 January 1982.

Over the decades as the UAE boomed, so too the airport grew, with Terminal 2 added in 2005 and Terminal 3 in 2009. The massive landmark Terminal A has since replaced all three—a 742,000 sqm facility—opened in 2023, cementing its status as one of the world's most ambitious aviation hubs, handling up to 45 million passengers. Terminal A is also the main hub of Etihad Airways, the UAE's national carrier.

How do you get to Abu Dhabi Airport?

Abu Dhabi doesn’t have a robust public transportation network, so the easiest way to travel to and from the airport is via a private transfer service.

Abu Dhabi has no urban metro system and no rail connection to the airport. Etihad Rail has begun rolling out passenger services linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but does not stop at the airport itself as of yet.

Note: The only possible public transport option in Abu Dhabi is the city’s public bus service, operated by Abu Dhabi Mobility; however, a Hafilat Card is required to pay.

Traveling to AUH by bus

A1/A2: Runs every 30 minutes between the airport and the city center (A1: Al Zahiyah and A2: Khalifa Street) and costs just AED 4 (USD $1.10). Pick up the bus just outside the Arrivals hall at Terminal A.

A10: The A10 runs directly from Zayed International Airport Terminal A to Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) City. The ride takes 1 hour 15 minutes and also costs AED 4.

Blacklane Chauffeur Service: The most comfortable and convenient way to travel between AUH and Abu Dhabi is with a Blacklane airport transfer from your home, hotel, or meeting directly to the airport. Your personal Blacklane chauffeur will greet you curbside, assist with luggage, and transport you safely in an air-conditioned, premium vehicle.

AUH Parking overview

Terminal A offers extensive parking just 2–5 minute walk, for both long-term and pick ups, open 24 hours.

Drive-up: The first 10 minutes are free, then AED 10 (USD $2.50) for 11–15 minutes, and AED 25 (USD $6) for 16–30 minutes. Rates increase from there for longer stays.

Pre-booking: For stays longer than a day, pre-booking online in advance is required. Rates are AED 325 (USD $77) for 4–7 days (saving AED 100 (USD $23) and AED 400 (USD $95) for 8–14 days (saving AED 1,025 (USD $242)). From day 15, an additional AED 50 (USD $12) per day applies, for a maximum stay of 30 days. So pre-booking is highly recommended if you plan to park up at the airport for a few days.

Short stay: Abu Dhabi Airport also has a short stay parking option, with the first 3 hours free of charge, with normal rates applying after that. Pre-booking is advised but not required.
